Building Brain Waves Newsletter

January 23, 2020

Welcome to the first version of the Building Brain Waves Newsletter!

The goal of this newsletter is twofold:
1. To share useful mental health/self-development skills, tools, and information.
2. To give you something fun to enjoy.

Without further ado, let’s jump in…

A quote, a thought, something fun, and the value-add of the week

A Quote From Someone:

“If you can’t fly then run, if you can’t run then walk, if you can’t walk then crawl, but whatever you do you have to keep moving forward.” - Martin Luther King Jr.

A Thought From Me:

You don’t have to believe every lie your brain tells you.

Have you ever had a stomach-ache that didn’t amount to anything? Occasionally, all our stomachs throw us warning signs that something is wrong and that we’re going to be sick, but a lot of the time we never actually end up getting sick. Usually it’s just a bit of indigestion.

Our brains work the same way. Sometimes brains throw thoughts and feelings at you that are downright scary and worrisome, but these thoughts and feelings don’t have to control you. In fact, usually these thoughts and feelings don’t actually mean anything at all. We can learn to embrace those thoughts while we continue pursuing things that matter to us. You don’t always have to trust your brain.

Something Fun:

I grew up on Zoobooks and watching Steve Irwin. Needless to say, I’m a big fan of animals and nature, and earlier this week I stumbled on the following web page that gives you a glimpse at how deep the ocean is. Enjoy!

Value-add of the week:

This week my friend Bethany and I went through the drive through at Chick-fil-A. We ordered as normal. Then as we pulled up to the pay/pick-up window, the employee gave us our food and said, “your food is on us today” and insisted that we take the food for free.

It was a small, unexpected gesture from a very successful company, but it seriously made my night. It made me reflect on all the opportunities I have each day to help lift the people around me, and how often I may be missing those opportunities due to being caught up in “my own world.”

Huge shout-out this week to Chick-fil-A for reminding me that it doesn’t take much to lift those around us. Simple acts of kindness can go a long way.
